John Whittaker,
Pub and Emporium Manager
John Whittaker hails from the northeast of England. He set off on his world adventures early, joining the Royal Air Force when he was just 16, which took him to Singapore, Borneo, Sarawak, other parts of Asia and Gibraltar. After his service, he managed a group of bars in Gibraltar, then returned home to run his own pub in England.
A qualified Yachtmaster, John has also skippered deliveries and charters in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, and did double duty as Quarterdeck manager and Pub manager for three years at Bitter End. The boating life runs in the family—John’s son Andrew is Bitter End’s Boatwright (his older son lives in Germany). For the past couple of years, he was the co-general manager of Biras Creek with his partner, Christine Oliver. Fortunately, he is, as he puts it, “delighted to be back at Bitter End, which I have always considered home.”
