Jerry Vanterpool,
Jack-of-all-trades, Retires

Jerry began his tenure at the Bitter End on December 18, 1981, as a Harbor Master. His tasks included collecting mooring fees and issuing receipts, transporting guests to dinner at the Clubhouse Restaurant and back to their private boats and to and from Gun Creek. Soon he became involved with construction and took up work building the Trade Winds Resort during the daytime, maintaining his Harbor Master duties in the evenings. Then in 1987, he took on supervising the Grounds Department. Keeping the beaches and grounds neat and clean and physical plant organized and prepared for guests needs drew upon Jerrys organization and resourcefulness.
Jerrys adventurous nature, love of boats, and multiple talents truly fit with Bitter Ends pioneering spirit. Hed help prepare for a coming hurricane, show up early the next day to begin putting things back in order, all the while making sure guests and staff were safely transported to the airport, home or on a fishing adventure. In 1988, Jerry focused his efforts in the kitchen, using skills he acquired as a chef for Little Dix Bay. He continued his day job and four nights a week donned his apron and enjoyed cooking for the guests. All in a days work, according to Jerry!
Recently, Jerry faced the difficult decision to retire. He bid his colleagues a fond farewell and expressed appreciation to those who contributed to his personal success as one of Bitter Ends great Jack-of-all-trades. Working at Bitter End for more than two decades has been a rewarding experience, both for Jerry and for the resort and its guests. The bonds of special friendships and the numerous pleasant times are memories he will forever hold dear. Jerry sends his heartfelt gratitude to the Hokin family for the special part they have played over the years, and he wishes the entire staff and management continued prosperity. Smooth sailing!
