Pies Odyssey

by Gordo Overing
This is a true story about the lengths some of our guests will go to in order to get a piece of Bitter Ends famous Key Lime Pie.
The mother of one of my daughters classmates called one evening to ask if we could arrange to have a Key Lime Pie sent to Tortola. Apparently, some friends of hers had been to Bitter End a few years ago and they could not stop dreaming about that tasty Pie.
We were happy to help.
My wife Nathalie asked restaurant manager Grace Vanterpool to call our world famous pastry chef Winston Butler, and ask if he could set aside a pie for us. Of course he was pleased to assist us with our special request.
My daughter Ali would be the Pie Courier. Nathalie carefully packed Pie in ice and then off it went to school. Now, for those of you who dont know how Ali gets to school, she travels two miles to Gun Creek on our 11 foot Whaler, six miles to Spanish Town in our trusty Daihatsu Feroza, where she then boards a public ferry to travel 12 miles to Road Town, Tortola. Once there, she catches the school bus for a four mile drive to finally reach school, and on this day, all of this with a frozen Pie!
Johanna Boyd, the Pie Broker, met Ali at school and quickly whisked Pie off to her fridge where it camped for three days. Her friends would be staying on St John the following week so Pie could take a well deserved rest.
The next leg of the journey was a 14 mile car ride along the scenic shore of Tortola to meet the West End ferry traveling to St John. Pie relaxed at a friends house, patiently waiting for the next leg of the voyage. Three more days passed and Pie was finally loaded onto the St John ferry
unaccompanied. After a 30 minute ferry ride, Pie was met at the customs dock by a cab driver and was quickly whisked to a nearby hotel where the hungry guests waited with bibs on and forks at the ready.
Sorry to say, our hero was quickly devoured, thus ending a rather amazing journey.
The good news is it left behind plenty of brothers and sisters ready to make future guests happy.
Thanks Winston! Thanks Ali! Thanks Pie!
