Beer Can Racing at BEYC
Beer can race at Bitter End Yacht Club

Knowing full well that nobody enjoys having a cold beer after racing sailboats on the North Sound, Watersports Czar Gordo Overing has nonetheless instituted a set of Wednesday night casual races known as the “Beer Can” racing series. “It doesn’t so much have to do with the beer necessarily,” says Overing as Wednesday night’s competitors begin to arrive, each with a cold six pack in hand, “the cans we are really referring to are the buoys that the racers go around. But if these folks want to have a cold beer, well that’s fine with me.”

Led by summertime staff member Rob Hebert, the racing takes place every Wednesday at 4:30 pm. Staff, house guests and visiting boaters come down to the Watersports Center and rig the boat of their choice before heading out onto the sound to see who is Wednesday’s best sailor. Next time you’re down at BEYC make sure you swing by for the Wednesday races, and don’t forget the beer cans.
