Rediscover Windsurfing At Bitter End

Gordo Overing Windsurfing

by Gordo Overing

The sport of Windsurfing is almost 40 years old and, if the demographic research is correct, the majority of practicing windsurfers are approaching 50. Wow! I remember buying my first windsurfing magazine in the late 70’s and then finally saving up enough money to buy my first board at the Montreal boat show in 1980. Twenty-three years later, I am still hooked on this fantastic sport. No matter how badly my day may be going (yes, we do have bad days in paradise too!), a quick one hour lunchtime session in 15-20 knots of breeze will set my brain back on track.

Of course, I know how lucky I am to be able to go from work to the water in five minutes. (I keep my surf shorts handy at all times.) The average windsurfer has an old board and sail hanging in the garage and, if the wind looks good, it takes a solid two hours of prep from home to hooking in and holding on. By the time you get to your favorite spot, the wind has died. Let’s face it, that is a pain in the patoot!

The answer to this problem is of course Bitter End. (How did you know I was going to say that?) In fact, we have a wide selection of equipment for all levels of sailor, some of the best wind and water conditions in the world, great instructors and our famous Bitter End casual approach makes us the perfect destination to rediscover the thrill of windsurfing. The equipment has improved so much over the years, making even the rusty sailor look good in just a few hours. We will rig your equipment, recommend sail and board choices, point you to where the best wind is and even come and pick you up if you get tired. (Of course we pick you up… we have to get our equipment back, heh heh.).

Bitter End is also a great place to introduce novices to the joys of plane-ing. So while the shred king is out working on his jibes, new sailors can work with our instructors using the latest in teaching techniques and equipment. It won’t be long before the next Robbie Naish (the all time king of windsurfing) is zooming down the Sound toward Gun Creek. Of course, coming home is another story, but we get to that part in lesson 2!

If you are looking for a place to get your windsurfing fix, come and see us. We will be happy to remind you how much fun this sport really is — our staff is standing by to get you back in the straps.

Later, Shred Dudes and Dudettes!
