Get to Know:
Ephsie “Rick” Ricketts

Ephsie “Rick” Ricketts

Those of you familiar with Bitter End’s marine operations have probably run into Ephsie in the bilge of a boat or in his shop. For those of you who aren’t as familiar with Bitter End’s marina services, Ephsie is the guy that keeps all the diesel engines running on land and sea. Ephsie, otherwise known as ”Rick,” has been working at Bitter End for almost ten years and is originally from Jamaica. Rick is a certified Caterpillar mechanic and has worked on ships, earthmovers, locomotives and of course, yachts. He is very methodical and analytical about his approach to fixing diesels. If there is a way of improving on the original design he does it; this might mean resizing the oil pan, which was recently done on North Sounder, or installing three ring pistons in the blocks instead of two rings to improve performance and longevity.

Did you know? Between generators and boat engines, Bitter End has 12 big diesel engines ranging in horsepower from 275HP to 435HP. If you add up the total running time of these engines in one year it comes to around 7,500 hours. If the same engines were running in your private boats the average engine hours in one year would be around 900 hours! Bitter End puts lots of hours on its engines and that is why Rick is such an integral part of the operation. He can take an engine down to the last washer and totally rebuild it to factory specs. There are lots of mechanics out there, but not many can do that! On top of all his ability he is also a really nice guy. So when you’re in North Sound and you have a problem with your engine, give us a call and let the “Doctor of diesels” diagnose your engine. –Dave Pugsley
