Seen at Bitter End: S/V Pyewacket

It’s been quite a year for the turbocharged Reichel-Pugh designed 75-foot maxi sled, Pyewacket, seen here at the front dock at the Bitter End. She started out by sweeping the three major Caribbean events: St. Martin’s Heineken Regatta, the BVI Spring Regatta and Antigua Sailing Week. If that wasn’t enough, she went on to take line honors in the Newport-Bermuda Race, setting a new course record along the way. She then got on a truck out to the Midwest, where she proceeded to smash the Chicago-Mackinac Race record.

During the BVI Spring Regatta, Pyewacket put in a port call at Bitter End on practice day. The crew (including the Bitter End’s own John Glynn) came ashore, enjoyed lunch, took out a few windsurfers and Lasers, and did a little “pickup racing.” There was a steady stream of onlookers out on the docks checking out what many consider to be the fastest (IMS legal) racing boat of our generation.

According to Roy Disney, owner of Pyewacket, the stop at the Bitter End was the highlight of his visit to the BVI. He plans to return to the BVI soon to test the mettle of his new boat, with a stop at BEYC for a dose of relaxing fun.

All’s Well on the “Water-front”

by ave Pugsley, Director of Marine Operations

This past summer Bitter End’s waterfront was a-buzz with a steady flow of visiting yachts from all over the world—both sail and power. One of the many highlights was a return visit by a group of high-powered Viking Yachts. A good time was had by all. Throughout June, July and August, we enjoyed taking care of our regular Quarterdeck Members, and we were proud to offer a new level of Quarterdeck membership—Quarterdeck Gold. The associated services and inclusions make the Gold membership a good value for the regular boat visitor, particularly those who bring a big crew!

Currently we are looking forward to a solid winter season, as a number of exciting yacht club flotillas are coming our way. We are particularly looking forward to the Cruising Club of America, and the St. Francis Yacht Club, as well as the ClubSwan Rendezvous. Our concrete L-dock has become the port of choice for visiting mega yachts, and we anticipate a steady flow of 100-plus footers throughout the season—you never know who may be aboard! Boats of all make and sizes are welcome at Bitter End.

If your plans call for keeping a boat in the Caribbean this winter, but you’re not sure where, consider our Yacht Management program. Depending upon what an owner wishes, various programs can be custom tailored to meet those needs. Bitter End is the perfect winter address for any visiting yacht, be it a Swan, Catalina, Hinckley, Little Harbor, or Cherubini. And it’s equidistant from Beef Island Airport and Road Town. Come and go as you like, and leave the dirty work to us! Have your cruising guests fly in to meet you, and enjoy all the charms of the Bitter End. We’re just a short ferry ride from the airport.

The Bitter End’s fleet enters the 2003 season primed and ready to go. Our Caterpillar diesels are all on line, and our excursion fleet awaits. Come visit and see the world’s largest resort fleet in action. See you on the water!

Boaters’ Services at BEYC

With all the activity going on in North Sound, it might be hard to distinguish guests from staff members who are there to help out. Here are a few things we’d like to remind you of:

Leave the driving to us; it’s a free ride. While moored at BEYC, hail Bitter End’s Harbormaster, Captain Isaac, on VHF Channel 16 for a quick ride to the dock and the evening’s activities, be they dining, dancing, drinking, or shopping. If you miss Captain Isaac in the mooring field, you can always square up your mooring fee at the Quarterdeck Marina 9 am to 5 pm daily.

Have no fear, BEYC can get you on your way. Marine Operations offers certified outboard mechanics, certified diesel technicians, air conditioning technicians and boatwright service. Our team is certified to repair a variety of outboard makes, and not only can we sell you a new engine, but our certified mechanics can fix those pesky little problems that always crop up at the worst possible time. Be sure to check with Shadow and Ricky, our mechanics extraordinaire, about what specials we are running. We will take your old engine in trade or ask about our used engine inventory. We also handle a variety of charter boat field repairs for the charter companies in the BVI.

Perhaps you like to do it yourself. If you’re a Mr. Fix-it, visit our Chandlery, which stocks many items that are useful while you cruise. We stock a full range of fasteners, batteries, charts, cleaning supplies, line etc. We can help you find that missing nut or bolt, or assist in a total refit.
