Get to Know:
Guy Clothier and Yacht Shots

Smile next time you’re frolicking about on North Sound. And keep a keen eye out for the Bitter End Yacht Club’s resident photographer, Guy Clothier. Strapped into his high-powered trademark gray “Yacht-Shots” inflatable dinghy, Guy has become somewhat of an icon on the high seas, and ashore.

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Guy early on developed a lust for the outdoors and nature. After high school, he went farming in the country, but eventually tried city living, taking up commercial photography (as an assistant) for the first time. Restless in the city, Guy decided to learn to sail, signing on as crew on a privately owned trimaran, cruising from Durban, South Africa, around the Cape and up to Namibia. From there he set out across the Atlantic to Brazil, cruising up coast to the Caribbean, where he ran day charters for the exclusive Petit St Vincent resort in the Grenadines. A whirlwind tour of the US followed, including construction work and cattle ranching in Idaho, plus logging, offshore drilling, and King Crab fishing in Alaska.

Itching to return to the Caribbean, Guy bought a boat in Key Largo, Florida and sailed to St Thomas. While cruising down island, Guy met marine photographer Tim Wright, who suggested photographing charter yachts and selling to the crews. Guy made his way to the BVI, and went to work in Tortola. But he knew North Sound would be a perfect spot to ply his new trade. He moved over to Virgin Gorda, and went about shooting charter sailors. His darkroom was on his boat, and he would deliver prints each morning.

Knowing a good thing when she sees it, one day Bitter End YC owner Dana Hokin invited Guy to breakfast, and they hit it off right away. The Bitter End was in need of a resident photographer, so Dana’s family offered Guy a place to set up shop at the resort. Five years hence, Guy’s input and involvement with the Bitter End has expanded greatly. In addition to his on-going yacht-shot business, on any given day Guy can be found photographing the resort activities, from Laser & Rhodes 19 racing on Sundays to excursions to Anegada. Shore-side, he photographs weddings, special events, and all the honeymoon shots. And his photos have graced the pages of numerous international magazines and web sites.

Guy posts the photos he shoots daily at the Watersports Center, and he processes selected images for next day delivery. His darkroom is housed adjacent to Kilbrides Underwater Tours. For specific shots, Guy can also shoot with digital equipment, and e-mail images around the world in seconds.

When he’s not shooting or developing, Guy can be found bushwhacking hiking trails—his latest passion. This summer, with help from three other members of staff (Petrina, Andy, & Spencer), Guy cleared a trail so that guests can now hike from BEYC to Biras Creek, by going over the 445 foot high Biras Hill (see activities story). While on holiday, get to know this truly unique individual.
